In 2008 BBC2’s ‘White Season’ screened four films, one of which was an hour-long drama called ‘White Girl’. It caused some controversy by depicting a young northern white family as hopeless parents and degenerate drug takers. Local Muslim neighbours and attendees at the local Mosque are depicted as a caring and loving community.

The white couple’s 11-year-old daughter Leah seeks solace in the kindly and handsome young Imam, who teaches her about Islamic beliefs. This angers Leah’s parents. The drama has been described as mean-spirited racial stereotyping of white families, while contrasting Islamic traditions as being culturally superior.
